Camilla d’Errico: Nurtured by Nature on Vancouver Island

Artist Profiles Events & News 2 min read

Over the pandemic, Camilla d’Errico’s life turned upside down. Surrounded by chaos, the Vancouver illustrator packed her bags and left the city for nearby Vancouver Island, a close-knit community with a thriving arts scene.

“Moving away from the city was a big turning point in my life,” says Camilla. “[It was] marked by many losses, including my freedoms during the pandemic, my fur baby companion Loki, and a part of myself. The losses left holes in their wake, and the grief changed my perspective.”

Painting in a new environment, surrounded by old-growth forests, snow-capped mountains, and untamed shorelines, Camilla began to heal. Her transformation radiates through the work in her upcoming solo show, Nurtured by Nature, which runs August 26 through September 30, 2023, at Corey Helford Gallery in downtown Los Angeles. “The healing process that followed [my move] I would describe as ‘nurtured by nature’ because I reconnected with the incredible world around me up in the Pacific Northwest,” says Camilla.

Brimming with rainbow birds, bees, and butterflies, Camilla’s latest work seamlessly blends elements of manga and pop surrealism with the natural beauty of Vancouver Island. “Moving out of the city and into this community mindset struck me in an unexpected and fulfilling way,” says Camilla. “It highlighted how disconnected and restricted our lives can become when we’re isolated from the natural world. With this new collection, I’m bringing the great outdoors inside to celebrate its beauty, which I feel lucky to experience daily in my own backyard.”

Nurtured by Nature is Camilla’s fourth solo show at Corey Helford following The Color Wheel (May 2020), Sky (April 2018), and Dances With Dreams (April 2016). “We only have one world to share,” says Camilla, with a newfound appreciation for the natural world. “I want viewers to appreciate and cherish everything we have. To connect to it, protect it, and leave our natural world in a more nurtured state than how we found it.”
