In the 1970s, street art and skateboarding collided. Both groups were seen as rebellious, flouting society’s rules about where or what they could create; it was only a matter of time before the two cultures bled into one another.
Opening at LA’s REN Gallery on July 22, NO COMPLY is a tribute exhibition to the renegades who skate and create. The group exhibition features a stunning array of works that tap into the passion and energy of the skate scene.
Curated by Anne Martin of Sugar Press Art, NO COMPLY commemorates Gregory Clewlow, an influential photographer, skater, and curator who passed away in 2021 due to heart problems. Both Anne’s husband and business partner, Gregory was instrumental in the success of their business, Sugar Press, an eco-friendly print studio based in LA. NO COMPLY merges some of Gregory’s favorite things: art, friends, and skateboarding.
