Annual underground art show DesignerCon is back with another dose of geek-chic fun. This year the show skips its regular appearance in Anaheim, and instead heads online to avoid the crowds.
“Where we’re going, we don’t need halls,” says founder and producer Ben Goretsky. For its 2020 edition, DCON will broadcast and sell to thousands of attendees on streaming commerce platform Popshop Live. “This is unlike any convention that’s ever been done before,” continues Goretsky, “and certainly not something anyone has even tried until now.” The event expands into the digital realm November 13 through 15.
From collectible toys to a plethora of plushies, the convention still has everything your inner kid needs for a weekend of fun. Goretsky notes that the absence of crowds will give participants access to artists they might not have in-person.
Popshop’s interface will allow DCON vendors to hype exclusive merch drops, host artist talks, field questions, and show off products in their stores. Artists will be able to offer and sell commissions live during their sessions, and even broadcast its creation to fans.
Look out for DCON’s pop-culture inspired theme this year, too. The expo celebrates the 35th anniversary of iconic film trilogy Back to the Future with a series of related events. Attendees can steam a fan art show honoring the films, then pick up a couple of limited-edition action figures courtesy of DKE Toys.
For his part, Goretsky is looking forward to making the most of DCON’s digital makeover. “We’re going to bring the absolute best of DesignerCon directly to our community’s phones and screens for an experience they’ll never forget.”
DesignerCon 2020 runs November 13 through 15, hosted live on the Popshop Live app. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased here.
