With a technological cocktail of Zoom meetings, FaceTime hangs, phone calls, emails, and texts, it’s easier than ever to connect with people all around the globe. CONVERSATIONS, a group show at LA’s Subliminal Projects, rises to meet the challenges and opportunities presented by long-distance creative relationships in the contemporary art world.
Curated by Russ Pope, whose giggle-inducing doodles are informed by skate culture and punk rock, CONVERSATIONS surveys work by five groundbreaking artists who share a mutual friend in Russ. Selected for their skate- and surf-inspired designs, the participating artists, including Pope, discussed their work with one another through different methods of long-distance communication, creating the works separately.
CONVERSATIONS includes work from Nathaniel Russell, Lori D., Jahmal Williams, Marco Zamora, Lauren Beauchner, and Russ himself. This is Russ’ third curatorial venture with Subliminal Projects, a multi-functional gallery space established by Shepard Fairy and Blaze Blouin that brings skateboard culture and design to a wider audience.
CONVERSATIONS is on view June 25 through July 23, 2022 at Subliminal Projects, 1331 W Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, CA. An opening reception is scheduled for Saturday, June 25 from 7 - 10 pm. For more information, please visit the gallery’s website here.
